The Ndumberi Mental Health Awareness event, held on 23rd October 2024, aimed at raising awareness and providing education on critical mental health issues affecting the local community. Organized by WEMA PSYCHOSOL, the event focused on combating addiction, promoting self-love, and addressing the alarming rates of substance abuse in the region. The event was a great success, filled with spiritual enlightenment, insightful discussions, and a spirit of com-munity.
Opening Session: Spiritual Therapy
The event commenced at 2 PM with an impactful spiritual therapy session, set-ting a calm and hopeful atmosphere. Pastor Dorry led the congregation in an uplifting session of praise and worship, filling the air with a sense of unity and peace. Pastor Perry then delivered a heartfelt sermon, deeply resonating with the attendees, who could feel the presence of faith and healing.
Keynote Address by the CEO, Mr. Hosea Long’iro
Following the spiritual session, the CEO of WEMA PSYCHOSOL, Mr. Hosea Long’iro, took the stage. In his opening remarks, he welcomed all attendees and introduced the guest speaker of the day, Mrs. Josephine, the counselling psychologist.
Psychological Insights: Mrs. Josephine’s Counselling Session
Mrs. Josephine, an experienced counselling psychologist, delivered a comprehensive and engaging presentation that touched on key issues affecting the community:
- Addiction: She shed light on the physiological and psychological grip of addiction, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and breaking free from its hold.
- Self-Love: She urged the community to prioritize self-care and self-worth, explaining how loving one-self is the foundation of mental well-ness.
- Choices We Make: The importance of making positive life choices was highlighted, with a focus on how each decision can impact one’s future.
- Drug Abuse: The rampant issue of drug abuse was tackled head-on, with emphasis on prevention and rehabilitation.
- Effects of Drugs: Mrs. Josephine detailed the harmful consequences of drug use, both physically and mentally.
- Single Motherhood in Kiambu County: A specific focus was placed on the challenges faced by single mothers in Kiambu, a pressing issue in the region. Mrs. Josephine called for community support for these women to ensure their well-being and that of their children.
Message from Pastor George Barri
After Mrs. Josephine’s insightful session, Pastor George Barri took to the podium. His address focused on the difference between the body and the spirit, urging the members to understand the connection between spiritual health and physical well-being. He also echoed Mrs. Josephine’s concerns about sub-stance abuse, urging the community to work together in addressing this devastating issue.
Engagement with the Community
Mr. Hosea Long’iro returned to the podium to further engage the community:
- Introductions: He took the time to introduce every attendee, fostering a sense of togetherness and unity.
- Event Timing: Mr. Hosea Long’iro engaged the members in a discussion on the best time to start future events. It was unanimously agreed that 2 PM is the most suitable time.
- Substance Abuse: He reiterated the severe impact substance abuse has on the body and encouraged the community to remain vigilant in com-bating it.
- Resilience and Determination: Mr. Hosea Long’iro passionately spoke about the power of resilience and determination, emphasizing that these qualities are key to overcoming life’s challenges.
Special Recognition
One of the most memorable moments of the event was the recognition of Mr. Douglas Kimani as the Member of the Week. Mr. Kimani, who had previously struggled with alcoholism and regularly attended the meetings inebriated, showed remarkable improvement by attending sober for the first time. In hon-or of his progress, Mr. Hosea Long’iro appointed him as the Secretary for the Members, a role that will enable him to further contribute to the community’s growth and support his continued sobriety.
Appreciation for Supporters
Mr. Hosea Long’iro expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Pauline, the organization’s international donor and supporter, for her unwavering financial support, especially for providing funds for the meal. He also extended his thanks to all visitors, community members, and additional donors who had contributed to making the event a success.
Special Meal and Closing
The event concluded with a special meal of ugali, vegetables, and matumbo, a traditional delicacy that was well received by all present. The CEO led a prayer over the meal, and the attendees were served. Everyone left satisfied, not just physically but also mentally and spiritually, with renewed hope and a strength-ened sense of community.
The event was adjourned at 5 PM amidst laughter, joy, and a deep sense of achievement. The community members left with a shared commitment to continue the fight against substance abuse and to support each other on the path to mental wellness.
